Zero-click search is when someone gets their answer on the Google results page, or inside an AI tool, and never visits a website. It is now the normal outcome of a search: 68 per cent of US Google searches ended without a click in early 2026 (SparkToro). For a UAE business, the job is no longer just winning the click. It is being the answer, being the name inside the answer, and being the listing on the map.

What is zero-click search?

A zero-click search is any search where the person finds what they need without clicking through to a website. Google answers the question itself, using:

  • AI Overviews and AI Mode
  • Featured snippets and "People also ask" boxes
  • Knowledge panels for brands, people and places
  • The Google Maps local pack, with phone numbers, hours and reviews
  • Instant answers for weather, time, currency and quick facts

The same thing happens outside Google. When someone asks ChatGPT or Gemini for a recommendation, they often get a shortlist of businesses and never open a search results page at all.

How common is zero-click search in 2026?

More common every year. SparkToro's analysis of Similarweb data found 68 per cent of US Google searches ended without a click between January and April 2026 (SparkToro).

AI summaries are a big part of the shift. In a 2025 study, Pew Research Center found that people clicked a result on 8 per cent of visits when Google showed an AI summary, compared with 15 per cent when it did not. Only 1 per cent clicked a link inside the summary itself (Pew Research Center, via 9to5Google).

The UAE is moving faster than most. 70.1 per cent of the UAE's working-age population used AI tools in the first quarter of 2026, the highest rate in the world (Microsoft AI Diffusion Report, via Gulf News). More of your customers are getting answers without visiting anyone's website.

Is zero-click search bad for my business?

Not necessarily. It is bad for websites that rely on traffic from simple questions, such as definitions and quick how-tos. It matters much less for a business that wants enquiries, because people still click when they are ready to buy, book or compare.

What changes is where the decision starts. A customer may see your name in an AI answer, check your reviews on Google Maps and call you, all without opening your website. That is still a win, it just does not show up as a website visit.

Being named in the answer also pays off. Seer Interactive's 2026 study found that brands cited in Google's AI Overviews earned about twice the organic click-through rate of brands that were not cited, on informational searches in 2025 (Seer Interactive).

How do you stay visible when nobody clicks?

  1. Answer the question first. Use the customer's question as the heading and answer it in the first one or two sentences, then add the detail. Add an FAQ section with FAQ markup. This is answer engine optimisation (AEO), and our guide to SEO vs AEO vs GEO explains how it fits with SEO.
  2. Get named in AI answers. Keep your business name, address and phone number identical everywhere, collect Google reviews, and earn mentions on trusted UAE sites. This is generative engine optimisation (GEO), covered in full in What is GEO?.
  3. Treat your Google Business Profile as a second homepage. Choose the right categories, list every service, add real photos and reply to every review. For local searches, the call or the direction request is the conversion.
  4. Let AI tools read your site. Make sure your robots.txt does not block search and AI crawlers such as Googlebot, Bingbot and OAI-SearchBot, and add structured data so they can understand who you are and what you offer.
  5. Give people a reason to click. A summary cannot replace a price list, a booking form, a calculator, a portfolio or your own data. Pages like these still earn the click.
  6. Build demand for your name. People who search for your brand by name almost always click. Content, social media and paid ads that make people remember you feed those branded searches.

How do you measure success without clicks?

Website traffic on its own now undercounts your visibility. Track these as well:

  • Impressions in Google Search Console, not just clicks. Rising impressions with flat clicks means you are being seen.
  • Calls, direction requests and website clicks in your Google Business Profile.
  • Branded searches, meaning how many people search for your business by name.
  • AI visibility. Every month, ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode the questions your customers ask, and note whether you are named and what is said about you.
  • Enquiries. Ask every new lead how they found you. "ChatGPT recommended you" is now a real answer.
