When ads are not generating leads, the problem is rarely the platform itself. It is usually one of seven things: the wrong platform for how your customers buy, targeting that is too narrow, weak creative or offer, a landing page that loses people, broken tracking, slow follow-up, or a budget that is too thin to learn. Find which one applies, fix it, and the same budget often starts producing leads.
First, find where the leads are being lost
| What you see | The likely cause |
|---|---|
| Plenty of impressions, very few clicks | The creative or offer is not stopping people |
| Plenty of clicks, very few enquiries | The landing page, form or offer is losing them |
| Plenty of leads, poor quality | The form is too easy, or the ad attracts the wrong people |
| Good leads, few sales | Follow-up is too slow or inconsistent |
| Results swing wildly week to week | Budget too small, or campaigns changed too often |
Seven reasons your ads are not generating leads
- You are on the wrong platform for how people buy. Google Search reaches people who are already looking for what you sell. Instagram, TikTok and Facebook reach people who are not looking yet, so they need a stronger reason to stop and act. A business that needs urgent, high-intent enquiries but only runs Instagram ads will struggle, and the reverse is true for a new brand nobody is searching for yet.
- Your targeting is too narrow. On Meta, detailed interest targeting matters less than it used to. Meta itself says "the focus has shifted from niche targeting to creative diversification" (Jon Loomer, quoting Meta). Broad audiences with several genuinely different ads usually find better customers than tightly stacked interests.
- The creative or offer is weak. Every ad needs one clear idea, a hook in the first line or first second, and a specific reason to act now. "Contact us for more information" is not an offer. "Free skin consultation this week in JLT" is.
- The landing page loses people. Sending ad traffic to a slow homepage, a long form or a page that does not match the ad wastes the click. Use a fast page built for that one offer, with WhatsApp and a short form.
- Tracking is broken. If the platform cannot see which clicks became leads, it optimises for clicks instead. Set up the Meta pixel with the Conversions API, Google Ads conversion tracking, and lead events that fire only on real submissions, then optimise campaigns for leads, not traffic.
- Follow-up is too slow. A study of more than 2,000 US companies found that firms contacting a lead within an hour were nearly seven times as likely to qualify it as those that waited longer (Harvard Business Review). Aim to reply within minutes, especially to WhatsApp enquiries, and set up an instant automatic reply for out-of-hours leads.
- The budget is too thin, or judged too soon. Spreading a small budget across many campaigns, or changing everything after three days, stops the platform from learning. Give fewer campaigns enough budget and time to collect data before judging them.
Which ad platforms work best for your industry?
| Industry | Lead with | Add | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Real estate and holiday homes | Meta (Instagram and Facebook) with lead forms or WhatsApp | Google Search | Visual listings drive interest; Search catches buyers and tenants already looking |
| Cafés and restaurants | Instagram and TikTok | Google Maps and local search | Discovery happens on social; the decision often happens on Maps |
| Beauty and aesthetics | Instagram and Facebook | Google Search | Results and trust sell on social; people search for specific treatments |
| Lifestyle and fashion | Instagram, TikTok and Meta shopping campaigns | Snapchat for younger audiences | Visual products sell where people browse |
| B2B and professional services | Google Search | Buyers search for solutions; LinkedIn reaches decision makers by role | |
| Nurseries and education | Meta | Google Search | Parents follow and compare on social, and search "near me" when ready |
ChatGPT ads are a newer option, rolling out country by country. They are worth testing once the basics above are working, not as a fix for them.
Check the rules before you launch
- Property ads in Dubai need a valid advertising permit with its QR code on the ad.
- Healthcare and aesthetic clinics need approval for medical advertising from the relevant health authority, such as the Dubai Health Authority.
- Meta and Google policies restrict claims about health, finance and personal attributes. Ads that break them get rejected or limit the account.
