UGC stands for user-generated content. It started as the photos, videos and reviews real customers post about a brand. Today it also means content made by paid creators in that same natural, customer-style way, usually for the brand's own accounts and ads rather than the creator's feed. The difference from influencer marketing is simple: with influencers you pay for their audience, with UGC you pay for the content. For UAE brands, the essentials are a clear brief, written usage rights and checking the creator's Advertiser Permit where it applies.
What is UGC?
There are two kinds:
- Customer UGC: content real customers create on their own, such as a review, an unboxing or a photo at your restaurant. It is free, but you need their permission to reuse it.
- Creator UGC: content you pay a creator to make in a natural, first-person style, such as a try-on, a "day at the clinic" or a product demo. You own or license it, and it usually runs on your accounts and in your ads.
UGC vs influencer marketing: what is the difference?
| UGC creators | Influencers | |
|---|---|---|
| What you pay for | The content | The content and their audience |
| Where it is posted | Your accounts, your ads, your website | Mostly the influencer's own accounts |
| Follower count | Does not matter much | Matters a lot |
| Best for | Ads, product pages, testing many angles | Reach, awareness and credibility with a specific community |
| What to agree up front | Usage rights and how long you can use the content | Deliverables, audience data, usage rights and permit |
Why brands use UGC
- It looks native. Content that looks like a real person filmed it fits naturally into TikTok and Instagram feeds, where polished adverts get skipped.
- It helps ads find customers. Meta now relies on a variety of creative more than on narrow targeting, saying "the focus has shifted from niche targeting to creative diversification" (Jon Loomer, quoting Meta). Several creators, each with a different angle, give the system more to work with.
- It can run as creator posts. On TikTok, Spark Ads let you boost a creator's original post with their permission, and the engagement stays on that post (TikTok Ads Manager Help).
- It builds trust. A real person explaining why they chose you is more convincing than a brand describing itself.
How UAE brands use content creators
| Industry | UGC ideas |
|---|---|
| Cafés and restaurants | First bite reactions, "what I ordered", a weekend brunch walk-through |
| Beauty and aesthetics | Treatment experience from arrival to result, honest skincare routines |
| Real estate and holiday homes | Apartment walk-throughs, "living in JVC" style area guides, guest stay diaries |
| Lifestyle and fashion | Try-ons, styling three ways, unboxing |
| Services | "Why I switched" stories, before and after, a day working with the team |
How to find and brief content creators
- Start with the goal. Decide where the content will run (ads, organic posts, website) and what you want people to do after watching.
- Find creators who make the style you need. Look at their past content, not their follower count. Your own happy customers can be great creators too.
- Ask for a short test or sample. One paid video before a bigger package shows how well they take a brief.
- Write a one-page brief: the one idea of the video, three hook options, key messages, what they must not say, the product or service to show, length, format, language (English, Arabic or both) and deadline.
- Agree feedback rounds. Usually one or two rounds of changes, set out before filming starts.
- Put it in writing. A simple agreement covering deliverables, payment, usage rights and permits protects both sides.
Usage rights: what to agree before you pay
- Where you can use the content: organic social, paid ads, your website, email, outdoor.
- How long you can use it: three months, twelve months or indefinitely.
- Paid ads: whether you can run it as an ad, and whether you can run ads from the creator's account (Spark Ads on TikTok or partnership ads on Instagram).
- Edits: whether you can cut it into shorter versions or combine it with other footage.
- Raw footage: whether you receive the unedited clips.
- Exclusivity: whether the creator can work with your competitors, and for how long.
Usage rights are often priced separately from the video itself, so ask for them in the quote.
Do UGC creators need a permit in the UAE?
Since 1 February 2026, individuals who promote products or services on social media, websites and apps in the UAE need an Advertiser Permit from the UAE Media Council. Creators who post your content on their own accounts, or who are paid or gifted for a post, need one. When a creator's video runs only on your brand's accounts, the position is less clear, so check the creator's permit status before you sign and keep a record. Regulated sectors have extra rules: property ads in Dubai need a valid advertising permit, and healthcare ads need approval from the relevant health authority.
How much do UGC creators cost in the UAE?
Prices vary widely. What drives the cost:
- Number and length of videos, and whether hooks or versions are included
- Usage rights: paid ads and longer usage periods cost more
- Exclusivity within your category
- Raw footage and extra rounds of changes
- The creator's experience and language (English, Arabic or both)
- Whether they also post on their own account, which turns UGC into an influencer deal
Compare quotes like for like: the same number of videos, the same usage rights and the same period.
Reusing your customers' content
Customer posts are some of the most persuasive content you can share, but always ask permission before reposting or using them in ads, and credit the customer. A quick message asking "Can we share this on our page?" is usually enough for organic posts. For ads, get written permission.
