A social media strategy is a written plan that connects what you post to a business goal. It answers eight questions: what you want, who you are talking to, where they are, what you will post, how often, how it will be found, what rules apply and how you will measure it. The biggest change in recent years is where reach comes from: platforms now show most content to people who do not follow you yet, so content people want to share and save matters more than your follower count.

Instagram's head, Adam Mosseri, has said the three signals that matter most for ranking are watch time, likes and sends, with sends counting slightly more for reaching people who do not follow you (Social Media Today).

How to write a social media strategy, step by step

  1. Set one business goal and a number. Enquiries, bookings, sales, hires or awareness for a launch. "50 WhatsApp enquiries a month from Instagram" is a strategy goal; "grow our presence" is not.
  2. Define the audience precisely. Who they are, which emirate or area they live in, whether they prefer Arabic or English, what they search for and what they share with friends.
  3. Choose two or three platforms, not all of them. Pick where your audience already spends time. In the UAE, advertising tools reach about 12.5 million adults on TikTok, 9.7 million on Facebook, 8.4 million on YouTube, 8.1 million on Instagram and 5.1 million on Snapchat, while LinkedIn counts 10 million members (DataReportal, Digital 2026: UAE). Consumer brands usually lead with Instagram and TikTok; B2B companies with LinkedIn.
  4. Pick three or four content pillars. These are the recurring themes you post about. For a clinic, that might be results, expertise, behind the scenes and offers. For a restaurant: the food, the people, the experience and what is new.
  5. Choose formats and a realistic schedule. Short video and carousels work best for reach. Give every post one clear idea and a strong first line or first second. Post on a schedule your team can keep for a year, not a month.
  6. Write for search. Use the words customers search for in captions, on-screen text and alt text. Since 10 July 2025, public posts from Instagram professional accounts can appear in Google search results (PPC Land).
  7. Plan for UAE rules. Paid content and collaborations with creators need to follow the UAE Advertiser Permit rules, and property ads in Dubai need a valid permit. Build approvals into the plan so posts are not held up.
  8. Decide how you will measure it. Track watch time, shares and saves per post, and then the numbers that matter to the business: enquiries, DMs, website clicks and bookings. Review monthly and change what is not working.

Common social media strategy mistakes

  • Being on every platform. Two platforms done well beat five done badly.
  • Measuring followers only. Followers do not pay the bills. Enquiries and sales do.
  • Copying every trend. Use a trend only when it fits your brand and your audience.
  • No paid support. Putting a small budget behind your best organic posts gets them in front of the right people faster.
  • Ignoring comments and DMs. Conversations are where interest turns into enquiries, and replies also signal to the platform that people care about your content.
