SEO gets your website ranked on Google. AEO gets your content chosen as the direct answer to a question. GEO gets your business named and recommended inside AI answers from tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. They are not competing strategies: each builds on the one before it, and a business that wants to be found in 2026 needs all three.
What is SEO?
SEO (search engine optimisation) is the work of helping your website rank in search results. It covers three things: the technical health of the site, the quality and relevance of its content, and the links and mentions it earns from other websites.
SEO is still the foundation. AI tools draw heavily on pages that already rank and are easy to read, so a site that Google cannot crawl or trust is unlikely to be quoted anywhere else.
What is AEO?
AEO (answer engine optimisation) is the work of making your content the direct answer to a specific question. It targets featured snippets, "People also ask" boxes, voice assistants and Google's AI Overviews.
AEO is mostly about format: a clear question as the heading, a short direct answer in the first sentence or two, then the detail. FAQ sections are a common AEO technique. Google stopped showing FAQ rich results in May 2026, but it still reads FAQ markup to understand the page. For more on this, see how to rank in AI answers and featured snippets.
What is GEO?
GEO (generative engine optimisation) is the work of getting your business named, quoted or recommended inside answers written by AI tools. When someone asks ChatGPT "which agency in Dubai should I hire?", GEO decides whether you are on the shortlist.
GEO goes beyond your own website. AI tools look at your business details across the web, your reviews, directory listings, press coverage and what other sites say about you. Our guide to what GEO is explains it in full.
And AIO?
AIO usually means "AI optimisation" or "AI Overview optimisation". It is used loosely and overlaps almost entirely with AEO and GEO. If an agency sells AIO as a separate service, ask exactly what it includes.
SEO vs AEO vs GEO at a glance
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank your pages in search results | Be the direct answer to a question | Be named and recommended in AI answers |
| Where it shows | Google and Bing results | Featured snippets, AI Overviews, voice assistants | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, AI Mode |
| What it relies on | Technical health, content, links | Clear question-and-answer formatting, FAQ markup | Consistent business facts, reviews, mentions on trusted sites, structured data |
| How you measure it | Rankings, clicks, enquiries | Snippets and answer boxes won | How often AI tools mention and recommend you |
Why do all three matter now?
More searches now end without a click. A 2026 field study found Google's AI Overviews cut organic clicks to websites by 38 per cent on the searches where they appear (Search Engine Journal). At the same time, 70.1 per cent of the UAE's working-age population used AI tools in the first quarter of 2026 (Microsoft AI Diffusion Report, via Gulf News).
Ranking alone is no longer enough. If customers get their answer without clicking, being the answer (AEO) and being named in it (GEO) is what brings the enquiry. Our article on zero-click search covers what to do about it.
Where should a UAE business start?
In order:
- Fix the SEO foundations. Make sure Google and AI crawlers can access your site, every page has a clear title and description, and the site loads fast on mobile.
- Restructure key pages for AEO. Give each page one clear question to answer, answer it in the first lines, and add FAQs with FAQ markup.
- Build your GEO signals. Make your business name, address and phone identical everywhere, collect Google reviews, and earn mentions on trusted UAE sites.
- Measure all three. Track rankings and enquiries, and test monthly what ChatGPT and Gemini say when asked about your service in your area.
If you are launching a new website, this is the cheapest time to get all three right. Our website launch checklist covers what to check.
