AI website builders can get a simple site live in hours, which makes them a good choice for testing an idea, a one-page event site or a temporary placeholder. For a business that needs its website to rank on Google, appear in AI answers and turn visitors into enquiries, they are a starting point, not the finished job. The common gaps are generic copy, accessibility failures, content that AI crawlers cannot read, missing tracking and weak SEO structure. All of them can be fixed, but only if someone checks.
What is an AI website builder?
There are two kinds:
- Website builders with AI features: you describe your business, and the platform generates a layout, copy and images you can edit.
- AI coding tools: you describe the site in plain language, and the tool writes the code for a custom website or app.
Both produce a first version quickly. Neither knows your customers, your competitors or what makes you different unless you tell it.
What AI website builders do well
- Speed: a working draft in minutes or hours, not weeks.
- Cost: cheaper to start than a custom build.
- First drafts: a quick way to see layout options and structure before investing.
- Simple sites: one-page sites, event pages, coming-soon pages and quick tests of a new offer.
Where AI-built websites fall short
| Issue | Why it matters | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Generic copy | Pages that sound like everyone else give Google and AI tools no reason to choose you | Rewrite with your real services, prices, locations and proof |
| Accessibility | In a 2026 AudioEye test, all 15 sites built by five AI coding tools failed the most basic level of the WCAG accessibility standard (AudioEye, via Hawaii Tribune-Herald) | Alt text, contrast, form labels, keyboard use |
| Content AI crawlers cannot read | The main AI crawlers do not run JavaScript, so content that only appears after scripts load may be invisible to them (Vercel) | Check that key content is in the page's HTML |
| Weak SEO structure | One long page cannot rank for every service you offer | A page per service, unique titles and descriptions, structured data |
| Missing tracking | Without it, you cannot tell which ads or posts bring enquiries | Google Analytics, Meta pixel, conversion events |
| Arabic support | Arabic needs right-to-left layout and proper translation, not machine output | Test the Arabic version on mobile |
| Ownership | Some platforms make it hard to move your site later | Check you own the domain and can export your content |
Does Google penalise AI-generated websites?
No, not for using AI. Google says generative AI can be useful for research and for adding structure to original content, as long as the result meets its quality and spam policies (Google Search Central). It also says "it is critical to manually factcheck and review all AI-generated content for accuracy", including titles, meta descriptions, structured data and image alt text. Using AI to churn out many pages that add nothing for users may break Google's spam policy on scaled content abuse.
AI website builder: yay or nay?
| Yay, when | Nay, when |
|---|---|
| You need a simple site fast, such as an event, a test or a placeholder | Your website is your main source of leads or sales |
| You will review and edit every page yourself | Nobody will check the copy, accessibility or SEO |
| You only need one or two pages | You offer several services or serve several locations |
| You are testing an idea before investing | You need Arabic and English done properly |
| Budget is very tight for now | You plan to run ads, which need fast pages and proper tracking |
Using an AI builder? Check these ten things before launch
- Every page has one clear H1 and a unique title and meta description.
- Each service has its own page.
- The copy is yours: real services, prices, areas, team and proof, checked for accuracy.
- Key content is visible in the page HTML, not only after JavaScript runs.
- Images have descriptive alt text, and text has enough contrast.
- Forms have labels and work with a keyboard.
- The site passes Core Web Vitals on mobile.
- Google Analytics, the Meta pixel and conversion tracking are installed and tested.
- Your business name, address and phone number match your Google Business Profile.
- You own the domain and can export the site if you move later.
If you cannot tick all ten, the site is not ready to launch, whoever or whatever built it.
